We believe that literacy changes lives.
Our founder, Valerie Gilreath, is passionate about reading, because she knows the impact it has had on her own life. Valerie’s mother was not a strong reader, but she still read to her young daughter. Being read to from an early age fostered a love of reading that grew into a love of learning. The tools Valerie gained from reading helped her succeed in school, then in college, and in the work force. She believes strongly that reading is the one skill that empowers you to learn any other fact or skill. If you can read, you can do anything.
Being read to from birth lays a foundation of vocabulary, imagination, spelling, grammar, and critical thinking that are critical to a child’s development. We now have a term for this: language nutrition. A child’s language nutrition between the ages of 0-3 is almost as important to brain development as his dietary nutrition.
In short, we believe that literacy can change the world.
